In-silico medicine and tendon biomechanics

5 October 2025 / Alessandro Mastrofini

In silico medicine is built step by step, from medical images to computational models, each stage reveals a clearer picture of how the human body works.

A small example developed in Wolfram Mathematica shows how clinical images of human tendons can evolve into biomechanical analyses and patient-specific insights, enriched with beautiful graphics and visualizations.

The example is structured into multiple sections. First, the “Imaging” section outlines the transformation of medical images into a virtual representation of the patient, utilizing several anatomical marker points. Next, the image is converted into a mesh, a structure suitable for finite element analysis (FEA). Finally, multiple FEAs are performed to examine the mechanical behavior trends and the impact of the pathology.
